My main stream of research focuses on information encountering -- serendipitous information behavior, which I first defined as the "memorable experience of accidental/unexpected discovery of useful or interesting information" in the paper "Information encountering: A conceptual framework for accidental information discovery."
Based on my research, I have developed an IE model and undertaken further considerations of how different information users, information needs, environments (e.g. internet versus print resources), and types of information encountered affect information behavior, including sharing of information.
Extended Reality (XR) is a spectrum of technology which includes physical and virtual environments, including Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality, and which is increasingly accessible and impactful in higher education. Simmons University's XR Initiative leads research and teaching on usability testing, metadata development, and other XR innovations at SLIS, Simmons University, and the information professions globally. My interest in this topic focuses on the information behavior implications of XR.
Serendipity has long been valued by researchers and inventors, and as information recommender systems and their algorithms proliferate, developers have become increasingly interested in supporting serendipitous discoveries in search results. Lead by my former PhD student Dr. Carla Allen, this project considers variables that can be used to identify presence of serendipity in published research studies.

Lead by my former PhD student Matt Bird-Meyer, this project studies how unexpected information encounters intersect with journalism studies concepts such as news routines and story ideation. The most recent study considered reporters’ information behavior through the lens of the information encountering model.

Together with colleagues at the University of Osijek (Croatia) I am undertaking a study of information needs of Alzheimer’s disease patients, family, and their caregivers. The study analyzes what kinds of support librarians and information professionals can provide in response to the medical, psychological, legal, financial, and social service needs of affected populations. We presented a report of the first stage of the research at the 2019 BOBCATSSS Conference in Osijek.
